Talk Description

Institution: Compass IOT - Australia

Train level crossings pose significant safety risks to vehicle drivers, train operators, and road side users. There are more than 2,000 of these crossings in NSW alone. The increasing number of connected vehicles on Australian roads presents an opportunity to apply vehicle-generated data insights to better understand the safety risks at these sites, apply improved safety measures, and prioritise those crossings where treatments are most urgently needed.

Our presentation will cover:
-What kind of vehicle-generated data exists and at what scale there is in Australia (and beyond)
-How this Connected Vehicle data can be applied to identify and prioritise high-risk rail level crossings
-A case study, highlighting the importance of public-private partnerships between state transit bodies and research institutions and how connected vehicle data was applied to improve safety for all road and road side users.
-Other applications for connected vehicle data to improve the safety and resilience of local communities and smart cities
